The route

From Houston, carriers run I-10 east through Beaumont, Lake Charles, Baton Rouge, Mobile and Pensacola into Florida, then turn south on I-75 or I-95. Houston to Orlando is 1,000 miles.

Dallas loads usually take I-20 and I-59 to meet I-10 near New Orleans, or I-20 through Atlanta and I-75 south. Austin and San Antonio cars join I-10 right away.

When to book

Summer is the busiest season: Houston to Orlando is about $1,430 for a July pickup and $1,335 in February. From June through November, a tropical storm on the Gulf Coast can stop trucks on I-10 for a day or two.

Good to know

Florida asks new residents to title and register within 10 days of establishing residency, after buying Florida insurance. Out-of-state cars need a VIN verification (form HSMV 82042), which a law enforcement officer, a licensed Florida dealer or the tax collector's office can complete.
